Description

Jamie Oliver’s Soda Bread is a quick and easy no-yeast bread recipe that’s perfect for beginners or when you need a freshly baked loaf in no time. With a crunchy crust and soft interior, this classic bread is delicious on its own or served with soups, stews, or spreads.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 500g (4 cups) plain flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 400ml (1 2/3 cups) buttermilk (or milk with 1 tablespoon lemon juice)

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat the Oven

  • Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F). Line a baking tray with parchment paper.

Step 2: Mix the Dry Ingredients

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, and salt. Mix well to evenly distribute the baking soda.

Step 3: Add the Buttermilk

  • Gradually pour the buttermilk into the dry ingredients while stirring with a wooden spoon. Mix until a rough dough forms.

Step 4: Knead the Dough Lightly

  • Turn the dough out onto a floured surface. Knead gently for 1-2 minutes until the dough comes together. Avoid over-kneading to keep the bread light.

Step 5: Shape the Dough

  • Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it on the prepared baking tray.

Step 6: Score the Top

  • Using a sharp knife, score a deep cross on top of the loaf. This allows the bread to expand and bake evenly.

Step 7: Bake the Soda Bread

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Step 8: Cool and Serve

  • Let the soda bread cool slightly on a wire rack before slicing. Serve warm or at room temperature.
