Cheese Straws are a baked snack made from puff pastry twisted with cheese and seasonings. They are crispy, buttery, and full of cheesy goodness.
Ingredients
Scale
-
- 1 sheet of ready-made puff pastry
-
- 100g (3.5 oz) grated cheddar cheese
-
- 50g (1.8 oz) grated Parmesan cheese
-
- 1 teaspoon paprika or cayenne pepper (optional for spice)
-
- 1 egg, beaten (for glazing)
-
- A pinch of salt and freshly ground black pepper
Optional Add-Ins:
-
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano or thyme for a herby flavor
-
- Sesame seeds or poppy seeds for texture
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients
-
- Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
-
- Roll out the puff pastry onto a lightly floured surface.
Step 2: Add the Cheese and Seasoning
-
- Sprinkle the grated cheddar, Parmesan, paprika, salt, and pepper evenly over the pastry. Gently press the cheese and seasonings into the pastry with a rolling pin.
Step 3: Fold and Cut the Pastry
-
- Fold the pastry in half lengthwise to sandwich the cheese. Use a sharp knife or pizza cutter to cut the pastry into 1-inch wide strips.
Step 4: Twist the Strips
-
- Take each strip and twist it a few times to create a spiral shape. Place the twisted strips on the prepared baking tray, leaving some space between each one.
Step 5: Glaze and Bake
-
- Brush the strips with beaten egg for a golden finish. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until puffed and golden brown.
Step 6: Cool and Serve
-
- Let the cheese straws cool slightly on a wire rack before serving. Enjoy them warm or at room temperature.
