Description

Jamie Oliver’s Apple Chutney is a sweet, tangy, and slightly spiced condiment that pairs beautifully with cheese, roasted meats, sandwiches, and curries. Made with fresh apples, vinegar, sugar, and warming spices, this homemade chutney is an excellent way to preserve the flavors of the season.

Ingredients

Scale

    • 4 large apples (Granny Smith or Bramley), peeled, cored, and chopped

    • 1 onion, finely chopped

    • 2 cloves garlic, minced

    • 100g (1/2 cup) brown sugar

    • 120ml (1/2 cup) apple cider vinegar

    • 1-inch piece fresh ginger, grated

    • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

    • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

    • 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds

    • 1/2 teaspoon salt

    • 1/2 teaspoon chili flakes (optional)

    • 1 tablespoon raisins or sultanas

Instructions

Step 1: Sauté the Aromatics

    • Heat a saucepan over medium heat.

    • Add chopped onion, garlic, and mustard seeds. Sauté until soft and fragrant.

Step 2: Add the Apples and Spices

    • Stir in chopped apples, grated ginger, cinnamon, cloves, chili flakes, and salt.

    • Cook for a few minutes until the apples start to soften.

Step 3: Simmer with Sugar and Vinegar

    • Pour in the apple cider vinegar and add brown sugar.

    • Stir well and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.

Step 4: Cook Until Thickened

    • Let the chutney simmer on low heat for 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally.

    • The chutney is ready when the apples have softened, and the mixture has thickened.

Step 5: Store in Jars

    • Allow the chutney to cool slightly before transferring it to sterilized jars.

    • Seal and store in the refrigerator.
