Description

Jamie Oliver Fish Pie is a traditional British dish made with a mixture of white fish, often combined with smoked fish, in a creamy sauce, topped with mashed potatoes and baked until golden. It’s a comforting meal that’s easy to make, hearty, and full of flavor.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Fish Filling:

    • 500g mixed fish (such as cod, haddock, and salmon), skinless and boneless

    • 200g smoked fish (optional, such as smoked haddock)

    • 1 liter milk

    • 1 bay leaf

    • 1 onion, halved

    • 4 black peppercorns

For the White Sauce:

    • 50g butter

    • 50g plain flour

    • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

    • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

    • 100g fresh spinach (optional)

    • 2 hard-boiled eggs, chopped (optional)

    • Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish

For the Mashed Potato Topping:

    • 1 kg potatoes, peeled and chopped

    • 50g butter

    • 100ml milk or cream

    • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Instructions

1. Cook the Fish

    • Place the mixed fish, smoked fish, bay leaf, halved onion, and peppercorns in a large saucepan. Pour over the milk and bring to a gentle simmer. Poach the fish for about 5-7 minutes until it’s just cooked through. Remove the fish with a slotted spoon and set it aside, reserving the milk for the sauce.

2. Make the White Sauce

    • In a separate saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour to make a roux, cooking for 1-2 minutes. Gradually whisk in the reserved milk from the fish poaching until you have a smooth, creamy sauce. Add salt, pepper, and Dijon mustard, and stir well.

3. Add the Fish and Optional Ingredients

    • Flake the poached fish into bite-sized pieces and add it to the sauce. Stir in the fresh spinach and chopped hard-boiled eggs if using, mixing gently to combine.

4. Prepare the Mashed Potato Topping

    • Boil the potatoes in salted water until tender, about 15-20 minutes. Drain and mash with butter, milk (or cream), salt, and pepper until smooth and creamy.

5. Assemble the Fish Pie

    • Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F). Spoon the fish and sauce mixture into a large baking dish. Spread the mashed potatoes evenly on top, using a fork to create a textured surface, which will turn golden and crispy in the oven.

6. Bake the Fish Pie

    • Bake the fish pie in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden and the filling is bubbling around the edges.

7. Garnish and Serve

    • Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley and serve warm.
